Pinging: How It Helps Blog Promotion

Pinging your blog is one of the most important ways to promote yourself. As a blog owner, you need to promote your blog to get people to the site and to the blog post that you have just created. There are many ways to do this. Most of the time, bloggers will use social media, search engine ranking through SEO and subscribers to get people to the site. However, pinging is another important concept you need to understand if you are going to get people to reach out and embrace the posts you put up.

What Is It?

The definition of pinging can be a bit confusing. However, this is a tool that sends a message from you to another computer. It then waits for that other computer to acknowledge it. This method allows the service to determine if another computer on the network is available.

Now, what does this have to do with the way your site will be promoted? First, consider how people will reach your site. One of the best tools available to you is your RSS feed. It allows you to get subscribers to your site that will come back repeatedly. However, you still need people to sign up for this service. That is not something that is easy to make happen.

Other services allow you to push the blog further, though. To use these, your blogging software needs to reach out to those services with a ping. If they do not do this that means the services do not know that your blog is even there. When you use a ping, you tell these services that your blog is indeed present.

Automating It

In order to promote your blog, you will want to ping these services. That could take a long time if you tried to do it on your own, though. Rather, you should use an automated method to ping the system. All you have to do is to set up this tool and it will do the work for you every time.

If you are using WordPress for your blog, for example, you can go into the Options section on the Writing tab. Then, click on Update Services. Once there, you can put in the website addresses of those services you want this pinging action to take place on. Once you do this, each time you put a new blog post up, those services will receive an alert to it.

There are various tools available for you to use. Do some research to determine which of these pinging services are worth the time based on the type of content your blog has. This will vary. The good news is it is worth doing this to as many sites as you can. Most importantly, realize that pinging is something you need to put a few minutes into just one time to set up and you really do not have to think about it again.

Why should you use this type of tool? Let’s make this clear. Unless you have thousands of people who are reading your post and sharing it with others, chances are good that no one is going to know when you have a new blog post up. By using a pinging service, you have a no-brainer way of letting others know that your site has something new to offer. This will then increase your traffic to that new post. That is what you need to do. Even better, it allows you to reach out to a much larger audience than what your social media sites can offer you.
